On The Boards: Lady’s Island Renovation
Lady’s Island Renovation
Technology in design is ever evolving and we strive to stay on the forefront. For a small firm, we think we do a pretty good job. In the past, the first step on our renovation projects was going to the house with our tape measures in hand and meticulously measuring and documenting the existing architecture. This could take all day, and there is significant room for error. A few years, ago we traded in our tape measures for laser measuring tools. This was better and more accurate, but we were still tramping around in the bushes with spiderwebs in our faces. We knew a better solution existed, but thought creating digital twins with lidar camera technology was cost prohibitive. The technology has become more accessible and we found that we could hire a third party to create a 3D digital model of the house and property which would cost less for our clients than having us measure the house and draw it up in Revit.
The real advantage to utilizing this technology is the accuracy and detail of the information gathered. We have a 3D Revit model of every aspect of the house, as well as a digital walkthrough of the property. No where has this been more beneficial than at the newest renovation on the boards. There is a 47” caliper Live Oak tree on the property- it’s big, and right up against the house, potentially blocking the area of the proposed addition. We were able to import the 3D model of the tree into our project, and voila- it fits like a glove- very cool!
