Wild Marsh Dogtrot
A Small, Contemporary Cottage
When our clients decided to retire, they weren’t looking for more space; they were looking for more meaning. They wanted a smaller footprint and a deeper connection to the landscape. The dream: a home that felt rooted in the Lowcountry, light on the land, and perfectly in tune with the tides, breezes, and rhythms of coastal life. Most of all, they wanted to live simply, sustainably, and intentionally.

We designed a compact cottage inspired by the historic dogtrot, a classic Southern form with two separate living spaces linked by a generous central porch. That breezy porch acts as a third living room, naturally ventilated and always inviting. The main house is just 700 square feet, with a 285-square-foot guest space, but the 530-square-foot porch makes the whole place feel expansive, open, and connected to the outdoors.
Set beside a tidal creek, the home is sited to catch views and harness natural ventilation. It’s elevated for flood protection and engineered to withstand winds up to 140 mph. A butterfly roof collects rainwater for reuse, and the structure is ready for solar panels and battery backup, ensuring long-term resilience. Every detail, from materials to orientation was chosen with performance in mind.
Built for the Climate and Future
The result is a quiet, modern refuge that feels both timeless and forward-thinking. It’s small, but never cramped; simple, but never spare. Nestled among the trees and marshes, the cottage offers our clients exactly what they were looking for: a lighter way to live, surrounded by nature, in a home that’s beautiful, efficient, and ready for the future.
