Shrimp Pond House Renovation

When we first designed the Shrimp Pond House on Spring Island in 2001, it was a peaceful retreat nestled along the marsh, full of possibility for the future. Decades later, the homeowners came back to us, not to start over, but to build on what they’d already come to love. After years of living in the home, they had a deep understanding of how they used the space, and how it could evolve to better support their daily rhythms.

Evolving Spaces for Evolving Lives

Together, we reimagined key parts of the home, beginning with the kitchen. A brighter layout, updated cabinetry, and new appliances brought fresh energy to the heart of the house. We removed some exterior porches to better connect the great room with the sky and surrounding trees, allowing nature to spill into the living space. Inside, we created distinct zones: a quiet corner for morning coffee and birdwatching, a table for cards or casual meals, and a warm spot by the fireplace for evenings with friends.

Throughout the renovation, we were intentional about honoring what was already there, blending well-loved pieces with new elements for a seamless, lived-in feel. Custom cabinetry in the kitchen now supports everything from baking to bar service, and even the family dog has a favorite window bench to call his own.

Personal Touches and Functional Design

The updated Shrimp Pond House feels as natural and welcoming as ever, only now, it fits its owners’ lives even more closely. It’s a home that has matured gracefully, evolving alongside the people who live there. Every corner tells a story of continuity and care. It remains a retreat, a gathering place, and above all, a home with heart.

A Case Study in our Book

The Shrimp Pond House is featured in our book, Contemporary Southern Vernacular: Creating Sustainable Houses for Hot, Humid Climates, as a case study on how a home can adapt and grow with its inhabitants over time. It exemplifies our belief that architecture should be a living, responsive part of our clients' lives.
