Rising from the Ashes
When a lightning strike sparked a devastating fire, this Beaufort home was reduced to little more than ash and memory. For the homeowners, the loss was profound, but so was their resolve. After navigating the complexities of insurance and grief, they chose to rebuild, not just in the same location, but on the very footprint of the original house.

Designing Within Limits

Because the original 1972 home no longer met current zoning setbacks, rebuilding required using the exact footprint. Rather than see this as a limitation, we embraced it as a design opportunity.

What had once been a plain, uninspired structure became something entirely new: a gracious, classically detailed home that feels rooted in place and time. Located in Beaufort’s Historic District, the new design honors the neighborhood’s scale and rhythm while introducing fresh architectural character. We infused the home with thoughtful proportions, rich materiality, and craftsmanship that speaks to both the past and present.

To fully embrace the beauty of the site and its riverfront setting, we added a generous two-story porch along the eastern elevation. This not only anchors the house in the landscape, but offers expansive, everyday views of the Beaufort River, bringing nature, light, and serenity into the heart of the home.

A Home Rooted in Place

What rose from the ashes isn’t just a house, it’s a story of resilience. It reflects the clients’ unwavering commitment to this special place and their belief in building something better. Rooted in history and ready for the future, this home is a beautiful reminder that even in loss, there is opportunity for reinvention.
