Contemporary St Helena Island House
We are pretty excited about the preliminary design of our latest house. Think lots of glass- looking onto spectacular creek view, gracious living spaces, both inside and out, the roofs are flat and either loaded up with solar panels or vegetation. It is fun to design for these clients who requested an “ultra-modern” house. The house is raised up to get it out of the flood plain, which also capitalizes on prevailing breezes.
Designing is a process – we present the initial design to our clients which begins the conversation. The above sketches were the first designs after feedback from our clients we revised the design as shown below.
OTB Frogmore
Our latest project on the boards is for a young, active family moving to Frogmore, SC. The piazza, screen porch and courtyard double the living space. The kids all have a fun loft space above their bedrooms; perfect as a reading/study nook or a hide-and-seek spot.

On the Boards- Camp St Mary
Our clients purchased an acre and a half on the Okatie River, the property is on a high bluff- a gorgeous view. There is an existing house on the property, a single story, brick house built in the 1970’s. Initially, we designed a renovation of the existing house. After analysis of the amount of work required, and the fact that they were structural concerns due to a very large live oak tree that was really close to the house, we’ve decided that a new house is the best course of action. Here are the preliminary design sketches.
On the Boards
The latest new house on the boards is on deep water on the Coosaw River. The clients wanted a “Mediterranean Ranch.” Here’s what we’ve come up with

On the Boards November
Fripp Island, SC

Coffin Point, St. Helena
This house is a dogtrot, with two bedrooms in the main house and another over the garage (one of the elevations shows an optional one-story garage, but the clients preferred the two-story option)

Colleton River
This house was put on hold last spring and is now back on the boards. It has undergone some revisions to meet the owner’s requirements.

On the Boards- September 2021
This month we are showing several smaller projects that we’ve been working on over the last few months.
Berkeley Hall
These clients are adding a great outdoor living space and pool to their Bluffton, SC house.

Okatie, SC
A new design for a fish camp on the Chechessee River in Okatie, SC

Cat Island
Beautiful outdoor spaces that are perfect for entertaining on Cat Island, SC

Lady’s Island, SC
A new garage/carriage house for a young family on Lady’s Island.

On the Boards in July
Brays Island
Here’s a house on Brays Island that we designed years ago. The new owners are adding on to the main house and also building a new guest house.

Palmetto Bluff House
This house is on a beautiful, wooded lot in Palmetto Bluff. The guest house is already built, we designed the main house and garage to complement the existing building and to take advantage of the marsh views over the May River.

Fripp Island
A fun renovation project on Fripp Island, perfect for family vacations, all year long!

Lady’s Island
This project is an outdoor living improvement. We have gotten lots of calls lately about improving outdoor living spaces. Adding pools, decks, porches, fireplaces/ firepits, outdoor seating, kitchen and dining is super popular right now!

Early Spring on the boards
Fripp Island
As we finish up one beachfront house on Fripp Island, we begin another. This house will have the public areas (kitchen, great room, outdoor dining) and primary bedroom on the second floor and the guest bedrooms on the first floor. The views over the beach and ocean are spectacular from the upper floor, so we may as well flip the house in order to have the best view from the areas where the family will spend the most time.
Harbor Island
Here’s another “upside down” house. This one is on Harbor Island and has views of both the ocean and of St. Helena Sound. This is a relatively small house that makes efficient use of space. The T shaped plan allows for great views from every room, ample outdoor living areas, and refreshing cross ventilation when the weather’s good for open windows.
Brays Island Cabin
The latest drawings from our cabin on Brays Island. When Brays Island was developed, the lots were divided so that they are all one-acre circular lots, resulting in privacy and screening from neighboring houses for its residents.
Brays Island Addition
Here’s another project at Brays Island. We designed this house about 20 years ago and new owner has some modifications to make. One the main house, they are building a small addition to house their book collection. They are also building a two story guest house.
Colleton River preliminary design
We presented the preliminary design to a client building in Colleton River Club, in Bluffton, SC. They have a gorgeous view of the Colleton River, as well as many beautiful Live Oak trees.
The goal of the design is to preserve all the Live Oaks and maximize the view. Here are the drawings:
OTB- September
We’ve presented preliminary designs to a few clients recently. The first two are new houses, and the third is a renovation.
This house is in Summerville, South Carolina. The client requested a modest sized house that is exceptionally strong. We are designing it to withstand 200 mph winds. The windows are protected by sliding shutters made of corten steel.

Next is this cottage, on Harbor Island. This is an upside down house- the main living areas are on the top floor and the bedrooms are on the first floor. This enables the owner to enjoy the best views from the areas where they will be spending the most time. The lot has the beach on one side and the marsh one the other, so the views from this top floor are going to be incredible.

This small house is on a beautiful piece of property on Wadmalaw Island, in Charleston County. Our proposed design increases the area on the first floor by moving the exterior walls to the edge of an existing wrap-around deck. A dormer is added to increase space and light available in the loft. A swimming pool is added, along with a carport and a plan for a future guest house. A perfectly relaxing retreat!
