2030 commitment
Jane is one of a number of architects interviewed for this article in Architectural Digest. She talks about AIA's role in combating climate change and reducing carbon emissions, such as the AIA 2030.
"Some firms have been grappling with these larger questions for years, while others have yet to take them into consideration at all. In 2006, the nonprofit group Architecture 2030 issued the 2030 Challenge, which seeks to make all new buildings, developments, and renovations carbon-neutral by 2030. The American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) 2030 Commitment brings together firms to work toward this challenge, evaluating each reporting signatory firm’s entire portfolio and collecting data on the progress being made. According to AIA President Jane Frederick, 252 out of 600 signatory firms reported data in 2018, and the reported projects had an overall predicted energy-use reduction equivalent to avoiding 17.7 million metric tons of CO2 emissions."
In our office, we are working on getting all of our energy data reported to the design data exchange for the 2030 commitment, we will blog about those results in the near future.

Jane is currently at Carbon Positive '20 Conference and Expo. I am sure she will come back with inspiration and knowledge that will help us continue to improve in our goal to reduce the carbon footprint across our portfolio.
Inauguration Festivities
Jane was welcomed by 2019 AIA President Bill Bates at her inauguration as the 96th president of The American Institute of Architects. The entire family and office traveled to Washington, DC to celebrate. Jane gave a speech that Benjie recorded here. Afterwards everyone enjoyed dancing the night away. David Lauderdale with the Island Packet wrote a great article about Jane.
Thomas Rhodes House wins AIA Honor Award
At the AIA South Carolina annual awards banquet on September 26, 2019, Frederick + Frederick Architects received an AIA Historic Preservation Honor Award for the Rhodes House located at 314 Laurens Street in downtown Beaufort. The Honor Award is the highest honor that the American Institute of Architects South Carolina Chapter can bestow upon a South Carolina architectural firm for historic preservation. The award is given in recognition of design excellence.
The house was originally built in 1790 and was owned by the Rhodes family prior to the Civil War. Oral history recounts that Clara Barton stayed in the house when she came to Beaufort to provide relief after the 1893 hurricane. The primary structure is a classic I-House form, one room thick, raised foundations, tall ceilings, with double front porches on the southern elevation.
Cheryl Morgan, FAIA, jury chair said, This is historic preservation done right! The fine design of the original house shines through and nothing in the plan adjustments distracts. They only make it a much more livable house.

Residential Design Magazine: Suited to a T
The new national magazine, Residential Design, chose to publish our T-House (see the T-House in our portfolio) in their second-ever issue! We couldn't be more pleased with the article, which so accurately captures the essence of our town and our firm. This project was great fun and our enjoyment of the design and process is reflected in the final product.
Editor Claire Conroy wrote, “Although much new building in the area evokes the “Lowcountry” look without a thoughtful understanding of its practical aspects and pleasing proportions, several local firms are mining these antecedents in fresh, appealing ways. Frederick + Frederick is one of the best examples. Jane and Michael have a deep knowledge of the climate, sensibilities, and sensitivities of the place they call home and headquarters for the firm. They understand the traditions of the Lowcountry, and the subtle ways to honor and elevate them at the same time.”
The issue focuses on small houses. Conroy commented “A small house is like a poem. Each design choice must fit the rhythm perfectly. It’s often as much about editing out what’s not essential as it is about choosing what to include.”

AIA South Carolina 2017 Firm Award
The AIA South Carolina Board of Directors awarded Frederick + Frederick Architects with the 2017 Firm Award at their annual awards banquet on April 21, 2017. The Firm Award is the highest honor that the American Institute of Architects South Carolina Chapter can bestow upon a South Carolina architectural firm. The award is given in recognition of design excellence and contribution to the profession of architecture that has made a lasting influence on the practice of architecture in South Carolina.
Kate Schwennsen, Director + Professor, Clemson School of Architecture, wrote in her nomination letter, “Frederick + Frederick is unquestionably a Small Firm with Big Impact, and a firm that many other firms look to for exemplary practice. The design excellence of their body of work has been widely recognized … But perhaps what is most uniquely important about Frederick + Frederick, the raison d’etre of their success, and the thing from which other firms could learn the most, is their innovative and supportive firm culture. They are a family-owned business that sincerely treats their employees like family. Jane and Michael moved to Beaufort to enjoy the lifestyle there … [and] so they do.”
Principal Jane Frederick said that they are humbled and thrilled to be recognized by their peers. “We would not be where we are today without all the fantastic clients who have made our work possible.” The Firm Award was first conferred in 1993 and Frederick + Frederick Architects is the tenth firm to receive the recognition in the awards 24-year history. Frederick + Frederick is honored and delighted to be the 2017 AIA South Carolina Firm Award Recipient.

Jane to be the 2020 AIA National President
NEW YORK – June 22, 2018 – The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announces three new leaders to its Board of Directors, which were elected at the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 (A’18).
At the meeting, AIA delegates elected:
Jane Frederick, FAIA of AIA South Carolina as the 2019 first vice president/2020 president-elect; Jason Winters, AIA of AIA Chesapeake Bay/AIA Maryland as the 2019-2020 secretary; and Jessica Sheridan, AIA of AIA New York as the at-large director.
From 2016 to 2017, Frederick served as an at-large director of the AIA Board of Directors while chairing the Board Public Outreach Committee and serving on the Board Visibility & Engagement Task Force. Previously, she served as the regional director of the South Atlantic Region from 2012 to 2015. Frederick also chaired the Small Firm Round Table’s Executive Committee in 2014 and served as president of AIA South Carolina in 2010. She has been a principal at Frederick + Frederick Architects since 1989 and received her B.Arch. from Auburn University.
“To create a future with better buildings, better communities and a better world, we have to be flexible, nimble and seize opportunities to turn dilemmas into advantages,” Frederick said. “As architects, when we are at our best, we don’t talk about the future—we create it.”
