Dave and Patty Wetmore wanted an Italian Villa design. The challenge was situate this grand house on a long, low peninsula lot that boasts a magnificent panoramic view of Broad Creek and surrounding salt marshes. The property is below the 100-year flood plain elevation; the living area had to be raised almost 10 feet above the existing grade. Live oaks were painstakingly preserved to flank the stair where a fountain cascades down along the entrance walk. A series of terraces gently transitions you up the 10 feet to the front door.
The long narrow floor plan parallels the shoreline while respecting the river setback. The public spaces are linked by an arched walkway that becomes the spine of the house. The walkway overlooks the raised pool terrace with a zero-edged pool. Most rooms have views out to both sides. The owners requested light filled spaces, traditional classical architecture, and a spacious library study paneled in reclaimed oak with ceiling papered in local nautical maps. The dining room is painted wood paneling with curved corners and cove lighting. The family room is located on the tip of the peninsula with a wall of curved windows opening to the panoramic view of the creek and marshes.
