Lowcountry Architects Since 1989
In 1989, Jane and her husband, Michael, established Frederick + Frederick Architects in Beaufort, South Carolina, a hot, humid town. The firm is residential design specialists who have intensively studied Southern vernacular traditions and the advances in building detailing for hot, humid climates; as a result, it create comfortable houses that fit the Southern landscape, climate, culture, and client.
In the early 2000s the firm had two different clients with remodeling projects that had been built without architects in the early 1990s; both houses had to be completely gutted because of mold and mildew. It was sobering to see workers in white hazardous-material suits dismantling the houses that clients had been living in just a few weeks before. This inspired the firm to research the best building practices for hot, humid climates. It worked with the local building official to allow the firm to detail buildings correctly for the climate, even though the details did not meet the building code. Finally, the 2006 International Residential Code, allows but does not require modifications for hot, humid climates.
Homes designed with a true understanding of the land have a timeless quality and seem to grow from the site. When you and your home are linked to your environment, you become aware of the rhythms of nature: the sun’s changing path, the wind’s direction, native plants and animals, tides, etc. Everyone wants and needs to be connected with the rhythms of nature. This is what Frederick + Frederick do best!
In 2010, Frederick + Frederick swept the Beaufort 3 Century Design Competition winning all three award categories. They also walked away from the 2012, 2011 and 2010 Robert Mills Residential Design awards with a citation and three merit awards. In 2004, they captured two of the coveted Honor Awards in the Robert Mills Residential Design Award competition, the highest honors granted by the American Institute of Architects’ South Carolina Chapter. In 2009 that were awarded the Best Renovation by Southern Living Magazine.This in addition to numerous past awards ranks the firm among the top in the region.
Frederick + Frederick was founded by Jane and Michael Frederick in 1989. Both received a Bachelor of Architecture from Auburn University in 1982 and both are LEED Accredited Professionals. The firm’s comprehensive design approach includes administration of all aspects of land selection and analysis, design and construction. Active listening, thoughtful planning, creativity and leadership skills result in designs that rejoice in both the natural beauty of the Lowcountry and the lifestyle of each individual client.
